Lake Ontario,
with room to wander.
Sandbanks’ Lakeshore Beach faces Lake Ontario in Prince Edward County, southwest of Picton. Pale sand, trees, and occasional limestone edges meet a wide freshwater horizon.
Start with the beach and let the weather set your pace. Save a separate afternoon for Picton’s harbour, a rural lunch, or the water views at Lake on the Mountain. This guide centers on Lakeshore Beach; Outlet and Dunes are separate nearby options.

Sandbanks, Picton, Prince Edward County, Ontario
01 / GETTING THERE
Begin with your road plan.

Get around Prince Edward County
Drive between the park and town stops, or arrange a local licensed taxi. Keep a designated driver for winery or brewery visits. Park only in signed areas, and check the park’s day-use reservation system before you set off.
On the beach
There are no lifeguards. Lake Ontario can develop waves and undertow in windy conditions; check beach postings, stay within your ability, and leave the water when thunder or rough weather develops. Beach status ↗
02 / BEACH ESSENTIALS
Know before you go.
A park beach with seasonal services nearby, rather than a continuous row of concessions on Lakeshore sand.
01 / HOW TO GET THERE
Follow the signs to Lakeshore
From Picton, follow the park directions and then the signed Lakeshore day-use entrance rather than stopping at the main gatehouse pin. Reserve your day-use permit when required, and use designated parking; busy days can reach capacity.
Official park maps ↗02 / BEACH ACCESS
A short path, then loose sand
Use the signed day-use paths to the beach. Loose sand can make the final stretch difficult for wheels. Ask the park about its beach wheelchairs and your specific route; an accessible campground washroom does not make every beach path step-free.
03 / THE SAND
Pale sand with rocky edges
Most of the beach is sandy, but limestone appears along parts of the shoreline. Sand can heat up in the sun. Carry sandals for the approach and check the bottom before entering the water.
04 / FOOD & WATER
Bring your own drinking water
Pack a picnic and enough water for your beach visit. The park lists seasonal food outlets at Outlet and Dunes, rather than a guaranteed concession at your Lakeshore spot. Check current services before counting on a meal.
05 / CHAIRS & UMBRELLAS
Bring your own shade
None listed for public chair or umbrella rental at Lakeshore. Bring a beach mat and a securely anchored umbrella or other permitted shade. Trees are set back from portions of the open sand; do not rely on finding a shaded swimming spot.
06 / RESTROOMS & SHOWERS
Use the day-use facilities
Ontario Parks lists vault toilets or outhouses in day-use areas. Campground comfort stations have different facilities; do not assume a public beach shower is available. There is no lifeguard post. Check park opening information before an off-season visit.
03 / THE BEACH
A day at Sandbanks.

01 / ARRIVE
Check before unpacking
Read the current beach notices and look at the water before choosing your spot.
02 / WALK
Stay on the paths
Use signed routes and keep off fragile dune vegetation.
03 / SWIM
Let conditions decide
Keep children within reach and skip swimming when waves or weather make it unsuitable.
04 / PAUSE
Make time for lunch
Eat in a permitted picnic area, then leave room for a town stop.
Arrive with a permit and a flexible plan. Walk first, swim only if conditions suit you, and take a proper break from the sun. If wind or rain changes the day, leave the shoreline and spend time in Picton’s shops or book a performance instead. Save longer County drives for another day.

NEARBY BEACHES
Three nearby shores.
Dunes lies northeast on West Lake, Outlet east on Lake Ontario, and Point Petre southeast. Distances are approximate straight-line measurements from the Lakeshore marker, not driving distances.

Dunes Beach
A separate sandy beach on West Lake, reached through the park. The water deepens more abruptly than at Lakeshore.
- Best for
- Dune scenery and a separate lakeside stop
- Facilities
- Seasonal concessions, day-use toilets, and parking; no lifeguards
- Good to know
- Stay on signed paths and take the steep underwater drop-off seriously.

Outlet Beach
A sandy Lake Ontario beach in the park’s eastern sector. It has a gradual entry, but conditions still depend on weather.
- Best for
- A different sandy swimming area when conditions suit
- Facilities
- Seasonal park store and grill, day-use toilets, and parking; no lifeguards
- Good to know
- Check its own water-quality posting and use designated access.

Point Petre shoreline
A stony Lake Ontario shore with exposed limestone. Choose it for a shoreline look or walk rather than assuming a serviced swimming beach.
- Best for
- Rocky coast scenery
- Facilities
- No staffed beach facilities or lifeguards; bring water and supplies
- Good to know
- Respect reserve signs and closures; avoid wet rock and wave-exposed edges.
Distances are straight-line from Sandbanks. Facilities change by season, so check on the day.
04 / MUST-SEE PLACES
Three ways to see the County.
01 / GLENORA
Lake on the Mountain Provincial Park
Walk to the lake and viewpoint for a separate inland outing. Check operating information and use signed parking rather than stopping along the road.
Ontario Parks / Lake on the Mountain ↗02 / SOUTH BAY
Mariners Park Museum
Explore the County’s maritime history and the lighthouse in the grounds. Confirm seasonal museum opening before making the drive.

The Regent Theatre
Use a performance or film as your town-evening plan, or a weather alternative when the shore is unsuitable. Check the theatre’s own program and booking information.

Sandbanks and Prince Edward County.
The pin is on Lakeshore Beach, not the park gatehouse. Picton lies northeast, Outlet Beach east, and the Point Petre shoreline southeast. Follow signed roads between them rather than trying to follow the water’s edge.

Leave room for the County.
Picton’s harbour, maritime history, farms, and smaller waterfronts reward a separate outing. These photographs show different places around the County, rather than views all visible from your beach towel.

WHEN TO GO
Choose the day you want.
Summer gives you the most practical swimming window, but lake temperature and wind still matter. Spring and fall are useful for town walks and scenery; seasonal beach services may be closed. Use the park’s current notices for your visit, and do not treat warm air as proof of safe water. Ontario Parks / current conditions ↗
06 / FOOD, LANGUAGE & LOCAL LIFE
From sand to table.

What to order
Look for local produce, cheeses, cider, and fish dishes when they are on the menu. The County’s farm stands and restaurant menus change through the growing season. Meal bands below identify their basis and exclude drinks, taxes, and tips unless stated.
Local habits
Cover swimwear before entering shops and dining rooms. Ask before photographing people or working farms, keep to public paths, and arrange a driver before drinking. Respect beach closures and take your litter home.

BEFORE YOU LEAVE
Good to know.
Which airport should you use?
Pearson is a useful major gateway, but your flight and onward route decide the practical choice. Allow for a road transfer; Picton’s small airfield is not a substitute for confirming scheduled passenger service.
Is Sandbanks good for swimming?
Lakeshore has a gradual entry, but there are no lifeguards. Check the current water posting and weather, supervise children closely, and skip the water when conditions are unsuitable.
Is the beach step-free?
Parking and paths are close to parts of Lakeshore, but loose sand remains. Ask Ontario Parks about the specific route and beach-wheelchair availability for your visit.
Do you need to reserve?
Check Ontario Parks’ day-use system before traveling. A busy park can reach capacity, and arriving without a permit does not guarantee entry.
Can you do every County stop in a beach day?
Keep your first day simple: beach, picnic, and Picton. Save the eastern shore, wineries, or studio stops for a separate outing with a planned driver.
