Plan your beach day ↘TOP 100 BIKINI DESTINATIONS / PACIFIC COAST
Start on the shore,
stay for the village.
You can spot El Tunco’s namesake rock from the waterfront. The name is Salvadoran slang for a pig, a shape people once saw in the rock. On shore, dark sand and rounded stones shift with the tide. Watch how the waves come in before choosing where to sit or whether to enter the water.
El Tunco is a beach village in the Tamanique district of La Libertad. The port town of Puerto de La Libertad is a separate stop to the east. Give yourself a beach day here and use another day for the port, the forest park or the waterfalls inland.

El Tunco, La Libertad, Pacific Coast
01 / GETTING THERE
Leave room for the road to the coast.

Get around La Libertad and the surrounding coast
Walk between the village lanes and the waterfront. For El Zonte, Taquillo and the port, arrange your ride along the coastal highway. Keep a return plan if you leave the village for dinner.
On the beach
Check the marine forecast, posted advice and the local lifeguard’s guidance where available. Stay out of strong surf, away from the river mouth and off wet rocks. Ask a local surf instructor about a suitable break before you paddle out. Beach status ↗
02 / BEACH ESSENTIALS
Know before you go.
El Tunco is a surf beach with dark sand, cobbles and a seafront walk. Conditions change with tide and swell. You can watch the water from the village side and keep the beach day comfortable even when the waves are strong.
01 / HOW TO GET THERE
Use the village approach
Follow the signed road into El Tunco and use an agreed parking or drop-off point. Walk the village approach to the seafront. Ask your host about any restrictions when surf competitions use the waterfront.
Official beach information ↗02 / BEACH ACCESS
Check the route onto the sand
The seafront walk offers a place to see the water. The final approach to the shore can involve uneven cobbles and sand. Ask about your exact drop-off, gradients, steps and accessible toilets.
03 / THE SAND
Dark sand, cobbles and a rock offshore
The shore has sections of dark sand and rounded stones. Wet rocks can be slippery, and the tide can narrow your walking route. Keep a clear path back to the village and look at the offshore rock from shore.
04 / FOOD & WATER
Eat behind the waterfront
You can find cafés, breakfast plates and seafood in the village. Bring water down to the shore and plan a separate meal stop if you want to sit in the shade.
05 / CHAIRS & UMBRELLAS
Ask about surf gear and shade
Surf operators in the village can explain the breaks and match gear or instruction to your level. Ask a specific venue about shade or seats and what a day booking includes.
06 / RESTROOMS & SHOWERS
Confirm toilets and changing access
Ask your accommodation or a waterfront business what you can use. Carry a towel and dry clothes in case you need to change after returning to your room.
03 / THE BEACH
A day at El Tunco.

01 / ARRIVE
Take a first look
Read the notices and check conditions before you unpack.
02 / WALK
Start with the shore
Choose a short walk that leaves you an easy return.
03 / PAUSE
Make room for a break
Drink some water and keep your plans flexible.
04 / TOWN
Finish with the village
Change into dry clothes before your next stop.
Start with the seafront walk while the sand is cooler. Look at the tide and swell, then take a short walk that leaves you an easy route back. Stop in the village for lunch and return to the waterfront to watch the light change. Keep the waterfalls and the port for another outing.

BEFORE YOU LEAVE
Good to know.
Which airport should you use?
Use El Salvador International Airport, code SAL. Confirm a driver or rental car pickup and tell the operator you’re going to El Tunco in Tamanique.
Can you swim at El Tunco?
The beach faces open Pacific surf. Ask locally about conditions and supervision. When waves or currents are strong, enjoy the view from shore.
Can you reach the sand step-free?
There is a seafront walk, but access to the sand varies and the shore has loose stones. Confirm the exact approach and facilities with your host.
Is Puerto de La Libertad the same as El Tunco?
The port is a separate town east of El Tunco. Plan an independent trip there for the waterfront and Sunset Park.
Can you walk from El Tunco to El Sunzal?
They are close along the coast, but tide and swell can limit a shore route. Ask about current access and use the road if the shoreline is unsafe.
