The bridge above,
the Pacific below.

On San Francisco’s northwestern shore, Baker Beach runs below the Presidio bluffs with the Golden Gate Bridge in view to the north.

Take the lower path to the sand, look north when the fog lifts, and eat in the cypress grove behind the beach. Leave time for a walk through the Presidio before heading into town.

01 / GETTING THERE

Get around San Francisco

Muni is practical for the city’s neighborhoods, while the Presidio GO South Hills shuttle also serves Baker Beach. If you drive, use the Gibson Road lots and keep the car empty of visible belongings.

On the beach

Baker Beach has no supervised swimming season. Stay well back from the surf and check park alerts before you set out. Beach status ↗

02 / BEACH ESSENTIALS

01 / HOW TO GET THERE

The last stretch from Lincoln Boulevard.

Ride the Muni 29 to Lincoln and Bowley, then walk down toward Gibson Road. Presidio GO’s South Hills shuttle stops at Baker Beach. The lots are free and fill early on clear weekends.

02 / BEACH ACCESS

Use the lower approach.

The lower lot has accessible spaces and a boardwalk to the sand. For wheelchair or stroller access, use that approach and skip the steep Sand Ladder. Contact the park ahead to arrange a beach wheelchair.

03 / THE SAND

Golden sand and a steep shore break.

The upper beach is sandy and broad in places, with rockier edges at the ends. Dry sand is easier underfoot than the slope at the waterline. Wear shoes on paths and give breaking waves plenty of room.

04 / FOOD & WATER

Pack the picnic before you leave.

There is no regular food concession on the sand. Pick up food in town, bring a full water bottle, and carry your rubbish out if bins are full.

05 / CHAIRS & UMBRELLAS

Bring your own seat.

The beach has no chair or umbrella rental service. Pack a low chair or blanket. Trees shelter the picnic grove and an open umbrella can be hard to manage on the windy beach.

06 / RESTROOMS & SHOWERS

Restrooms by the picnic grove.

Accessible public restrooms are near the parking and picnic area. Plan to change at your hotel and bring a towel for sand. Park information does not list public showers or a staffed lifeguard post.

01 / BRIDGE VIEW

Look north from the dry sand.

The bridge and Marin Headlands come into view when the fog lifts.

02 / PICNIC

Eat in the cypress grove.

The tables behind the sand have more shelter than the open beach.

03 / COASTAL WALK

Climb to the bluff.

Use signed trails and keep back from eroding edges.

04 / LAST LIGHT

Bring a warmer layer.

Watch the evening light from the upper beach and allow daylight for the walk back.

Arrive earlyWalk the dry sandLook northPicnic in the groveCatch the last light

Arrive before the weekend parking rush and walk north on dry sand for the bridge view. Stop before the rocks if waves are reaching them. Picnic behind the beach at midday. If the fog settles in or rain starts, head to the Legion of Honor and save the shoreline walk for a clearer day.

07 / WHAT TO WEAR

Layers for the coast.

THE BAKER BEACH KIT

Swim.
Walk.
Stay out.

On the sand

Wear the Baker Beach Butter Stripe bikini with a windbreaker and easy shorts over it for time on the dry sand.

On the walk back up

Closed-toe shoes help on the sandy paths, and a hat with a chin strap is handy when the wind picks up.

In town

Bring jeans or trousers and a warm top for dinner. Even a bright beach afternoon can turn cool by evening.

BEFORE YOU LEAVE

Good to know.

Which airport should I use?

San Francisco International Airport (SFO). BART leaves from the International Terminal, and the Muni 29 is the final leg if you come via Balboa Park.

Is Baker Beach good for swimming?

The National Park Service advises against swimming. Strong currents, cold water and powerful waves can reach well onto the beach.

Is there a step-free route to the beach?

The lower parking area has accessible spaces and a boardwalk. Contact the park ahead of time if you need a beach wheelchair, and expect loose sand beyond the boardwalk.

Can I buy food at Baker Beach?

Bring a picnic and water. Public picnic tables and restrooms are available near the parking area.

Which part of Baker Beach works best for families?

Start near the lower access and the picnic grove, stay well back from the surf, and keep in mind that the far north end is traditionally clothing-optional.
