Meet on
Mabul’s shore.
Mabul is a small, flat island off Sabah’s southeast coast, ringed by sand and stilt houses about an hour by boat from Semporna.
Give yourself time to get from Tawau through Semporna. Book the boat around your arrival, spend the days on the sand and the reef, and use the mainland for markets, food and a second day away from the water.

On the beach
Mabul has no public lifeguard service. Much of the shore is fronted by resorts, so ask your host where you can enter the water, keep away from jetties and boat lanes, and check the latest advice for offshore eastern Sabah before booking. U.S. travel advisory ↗

BEFORE YOU LEAVE
Good to know.
Which airport should I use?
Tawau (TWU) is the closest practical airport. Allow time for the road transfer to Semporna and the boat out to Mabul.
Is it good for swimming?
The water is calm on most days, but there are no public lifeguards. Swim where resort or boat staff advise and keep away from jetties and boat lanes.
Is the beach step-free?
Confirm the full route with your operator. Ask about the boarding gap, steps at low tide, jetty surfaces and the last stretch across sand.
Can I visit without diving?
Yes. Plan time on the sand or book a guided snorkel suited to your experience, and keep a shore plan in case sea conditions change.
Does a Mabul stay include a Sipadan permit?
No. Confirm it separately with a licensed operator, along with certification requirements and whether the park is open on your dates.
