Meet on
Mabul’s shore.

The sandy fringe of this small island is a good place to slow down before a guided look at the reef.

Give yourself time to get from Tawau through Semporna. Book the boat around your arrival and use the mainland for markets, food and a second day away from the water.

Keep your transfer operator’s contact details handy and check the latest advice for offshore eastern Sabah before booking.

02 / BEACH DAY

A day on Mabul’s shore.

For a first visit, consider a spring trip outside holiday peaks. Water trips operate through the year, and wind, visibility and tides vary. Ask your operator about conditions for your dates and again on the day. Local operator’s conditions guide ↗

01 / MORNING

Meet in Semporna

If you book with Scuba Junkie, check in at its Semporna office on the waterfront and follow staff to the departure jetty. Ask before booking whether your trip includes a landing and time at Mabul Beach Resort. Its beach is private, so confirm access with the resort.

02 / MIDDAY

From the jetty to the sand

On arrival at the resort jetty, ask staff to show you the route to the beach and where you can enter the water that day. Borneo Divers lists toilets and showers at its own jetty. Confirm any step-free boarding, shade or walking-distance needs with your operator.

03 / AFTERNOON

Snorkel, then catch your booked boat

Choose a guided Mabul snorkel suited to your experience. Before you leave the jetty, confirm where and when to meet the return boat. If you’re flying onward, allow for the drive from Semporna or spend the night in town.

If boats stay in port: Spend the morning around Semporna’s waterfront, then visit the Bukit Tengkorak archaeological site if the site is open and the weather allows. In heavy rain, have lunch in town and save the trail and the boat for a clearer day.

Ask before photographing people, and wear a cover-up when you leave the beach for the village or town.

BEFORE YOU GO

Six questions about Mabul.

Can I visit without diving?

Yes. Plan time on the sand or ask a local operator about a guided snorkel suited to your experience. Have a shore plan in case sea conditions change.

Which airport should I use?

Tawau (TWU) is the closest practical airport. Allow time for the road transfer to Semporna and the boat out to Mabul.

Can I reach Mabul the day I land?

Only if your flight and road transfer connect with your booked boat. Confirm the departure jetty and cutoff, and keep a mainland night available.

Does a Mabul stay include a Sipadan permit?

Confirm it separately with a licensed operator. Check certification requirements and whether the park is open on your intended dates.

Is the approach step-free?

Confirm the full route directly with your operator. Ask about the boarding gap, steps at low tide, jetty surfaces and the last stretch across sand.

How should I plan my return flight?

Confirm the island pickup and road connection before buying a flight. If you dive, also plan your surface interval with your dive operator.
