Whitehaven Beach, Whitsunday Island — Australia. Seven kilometres of sand that is 98% pure silica — so fine and white it squeaks underfoot and stays cool in the Queensland sun. Whitehaven sits inside the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area, and at Hill Inlet the tide swirls the white sand and turquoise water into patterns you can see from the lookout above. Reachable only by boat or seaplane, it is regularly named one of the best beaches on earth.

  • Best time to visit: Year-round; June to October brings the driest, mildest days. Stinger season runs roughly November to May, when a light stinger suit is recommended.
  • Average temperature: Around 23°C / 73°F in winter (June–August) and 29–31°C / 84–88°F in summer; the water stays between about 22 and 28°C.
  • Good to know: The pure silica sand doesn't hold heat, so you can walk barefoot at midday, and it is fine enough to polish jewellery.
