Navagio (Shipwreck Beach), Zakynthos — Greece. Reachable only by boat, Navagio is a small cove on the northwest coast of Zakynthos in the Ionian Sea, enclosed by 200-metre white limestone cliffs. On its bright white pebbles rests the rusted wreck of the smuggling ship Panagiotis, run aground in 1980, set against water so vivid it looks lit from below — one of the most famous views in the Mediterranean.

  • Best time to visit: May to October, with June and September offering warm water and fewer crowds.
  • Average temperature: Summer highs of 28–32°C / 82–90°F; the sea reaches about 24–26°C by late summer.
  • Good to know: Since rockfalls in 2018, boats are no longer allowed to land on the beach; the classic view is from the clifftop platform, or from the water on a boat tour.
