Diani Beach, Kwale — Kenya. Diani is a 17-km stretch of white sand south of Mombasa, fringed by palms and a coral reef that keeps the Indian Ocean calm and turquoise. Colobus monkeys live in the coastal forest behind the beach, crossing the road on rope bridges built for them.

  • Best time to visit: December to March and July to October, outside the rainy seasons.
  • Average temperature: About 26–31°C / 79–88°F.
  • Good to know: Time swims with the tide: at low tide the reef lagoon becomes shallow pools.
