Chalk Sound, Providenciales — Turks and Caicos. Chalk Sound National Park, on the southwest tip of Providenciales, is a shallow lagoon whose water glows an almost unreal shade of turquoise, dotted with dozens of small rocky cays. Calm and sheltered from the open sea, it is a favourite for kayaking and paddleboarding, and one of the most photographed views in the islands.

  • Best time to visit: Year-round; December to April is dry and sunny, and calm mornings bring the strongest colour.
  • Average temperature: About 27–31°C / 81–88°F all year, with the shallow lagoon often a few degrees warmer than the sea.
  • Good to know: The lagoon's glowing colour comes from its fine white limestone floor and very shallow water, so it looks turquoise even on a cloudy day.
