Cala Macarella, Menorca — Spain. On the south coast of Menorca, a short drive from the old town of Ciutadella, Cala Macarella is a horseshoe cove of white sand and turquoise water framed by pine-covered limestone cliffs. The Camí de Cavalls coastal path links it to its tiny sister cove, Macarelleta, and the whole island is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, which keeps this corner of the Mediterranean wonderfully unspoiled.

  • Best time to visit: June to September for warm swimming; May and October are quieter and still pleasant.
  • Average temperature: Summer highs of 28–31°C / 82–88°F; the sea reaches about 24–26°C in August.
  • Good to know: In high summer the access road closes once the car park fills, so most visitors arrive by bus from Ciutadella, by boat, or on foot along the Camí de Cavalls.

The beach

Cala Macarella sits in a deep inlet, so the water stays calm and clear. A short path over the rocks leads to its tiny sister cove, Macarelleta. Arrive early in summer, because the car park fills by mid-morning.

Culture & customs

Menorca has a strong Catalan identity and a long British history from the 18th century, which still shows in Maó's sash windows and gin-making tradition. Every June, Ciutadella celebrates the Festes de Sant Joan, where black horses ridden by traditionally dressed riders rear up through crowds in the old town squares. Islanders eat late, take long lunches, and many shops close in the afternoon.

Food to try

  • Queso Mahón-Menorca: the island's protected-origin cow's milk cheese, mild to sharp depending on age.
  • Caldereta de langosta: the famous Menorcan lobster stew.
  • Ensaïmada: a light, spiral pastry dusted with sugar.
  • Sobrassada: a soft, paprika-spiced cured sausage spread on bread.

Language & local phrases

You will hear Catalan everywhere. Try Bon dia (good morning), Gràcies (thank you) and Adéu (goodbye). Spanish is understood by everyone.
