The quieter side
of José Ignacio.
Playa Mansa lies west of José Ignacio’s rocky point, on Uruguay’s Atlantic coast. Fishing boats share the southern end with a beach that continues toward La Juanita.
Start with the waterline and the day’s flags. Walk toward the dunes, leave room for the working boats, and return to the village when you want lunch.

01 / GETTING THERE
Arrive through Punta del Este.

The headland is compact enough to explore on foot. Use a taxi or car for La Juanita and Laguna Garzón after checking the route and return arrangements.
On the beach
Read the beach flags before entering. Keep a gap from fishing boats, nets, and launch lanes. Mansa can still have swell and currents. Beach status ↗
02 / BEACH ESSENTIALS
Know before you go.
A sandy Atlantic bay on the west side of the headland, with working fishing boats and dunes farther north.
01 / HOW TO GET THERE
Choose a public beach approach
Head to the Mansa side of José Ignacio, west of the lighthouse. Use an established access and keep private driveways clear.
Maldonado beach information ↗02 / BEACH ACCESS
Stay on the boardwalk
Use the wooden dune approaches where provided. The last section is loose sand. Confirm a suitable route locally if you need step-free access.
03 / THE SAND
Sand beside the fishing boats
Expect fine sand, dune grass, and some rocky sections near the headland. Keep clear of boats being hauled up or launched.
04 / FOOD & WATER
Bring drinking water
Restaurants and shops operate in the village, while beach dining is seasonal. Pack water and a snack rather than relying on an open beach kitchen.
05 / CHAIRS & UMBRELLAS
Bring shade or arrange it
A personal umbrella is useful on the open sand. Hotel chairs may be for guests. Confirm any beach-service rental directly.
06 / RESTROOMS & SHOWERS
Check before settling in
A reliable public shower or restroom schedule could not be confirmed. Ask an open venue about access and carry what you need for the day.
03 / THE BEACH
A day at Playa Mansa.

Start on the sand
Use the established walkway rather than crossing the dune plants.

Walk the bay
Start along the Mansa waterline and keep clear of the fishing boats.
02 / AT THE WATER
Check the flags
Choose a staffed bathing area and ask about conditions before entering.
03 / MIDDAY
Leave the open sand
Find shade, refill your water, and pause for lunch.
04 / LATE LIGHT
Return to the western shore
The sun drops over the water on this side of the headland.
Playa Mansa is usually more sheltered than Playa Brava, but wind and swell can change the plan. Keep the lagoon and village stops for a day when swimming does not suit the conditions.

BEFORE YOU LEAVE
Good to know.
Which airport should I use?
Punta del Este International Airport (PDP) is the nearest main gateway. Montevideo’s Carrasco Airport is another option, with a longer drive.
Is Mansa always calm?
No. The headland offers some shelter, but Atlantic swell, wind, and currents still reach the bay. Follow flags and advice from the staffed post.
Can I walk to the lighthouse?
Yes, the village headland is compact. Keep to public paths and check current access if you want to enter the lighthouse.
Is this the same Playa Mansa as Punta del Este?
No. This guide covers Playa Mansa at José Ignacio, roughly 30 km east of the Punta del Este peninsula in a straight line.
What should I book ahead?
Book summer lodging and popular dinner tables ahead, particularly around New Year’s and January. Confirm each venue’s opening dates.
