Big waves to the north,
a sheltered bay in front of town.

Praia da Nazaré curves for about 1.5 km below the Sítio promontory, on the Atlantic coast of central Portugal about 120 km north of Lisbon.

The headland shelters the town beach, so the water here is calmer than at Praia do Norte, the big-wave beach on the other side of the cliff. Spend the morning on the sand, ride the funicular up to Sítio for the view, and come back down for grilled fish on the seafront.

01 / GETTING THERE

Start in Lisbon.

Get around Nazaré

The town is small enough to walk. The beach, the old fishermen's quarter and the seafront Avenida da República are all on the flat, and the funicular climbs the cliff to Sítio. Parking along the seafront fills by late morning in summer; use the larger car parks at the south end of town.

On the beach

Lifeguards cover the beach from June 20 to September 15, 2026, from seven posts, and the town keeps a smaller lifeguard team on duty outside the season. Swimming was suspended for several days in August 2025 and again in August 2026 after poor water-quality readings, so check the council's notices before you swim. Beach status ↗

01 / HOW TO GET THERE

Walk from the town center

The beach runs the length of the town, so most hotels are a few minutes' walk from the sand. If you drive in, park at the south end of the seafront; spaces along the promenade are gone early in July and August.

Coach times to Nazaré ↗

02 / BEACH ACCESS

Ramps from the promenade

The sand starts at the edge of the seafront promenade, with ramps at several points and no steps. In summer an amphibious beach chair helps visitors with reduced mobility reach the sea; ask at a lifeguard post.

03 / THE SAND

Golden and fine

Wide, fine golden sand that slopes gently into the water in front of town. It gets hot on summer afternoons; there are no rocks at the waterline along the main beach.

04 / FOOD & WATER

Seafront restaurants and cafés

Restaurants and cafés line Avenida da República opposite the sand, with grilled fish, ice cream and coffee from late morning. Cards are accepted in most places on the seafront; carry some cash for small cafés. Bottled water is sold everywhere.

05 / CHAIRS & UMBRELLAS

Tents, shades and chairs to rent

In summer, striped canvas tents, shades and chairs are rented on the sand by local operators, usually for cash. Outside July and August most rentals are packed away, and the beach has no natural shade.

06 / RESTROOMS & SHOWERS

Toilets, showers and lifeguards

Renovated beach toilets, including an adapted WC, plus showers and foot-washing stations along the promenade in season. Lifeguard posts are staffed June 20–September 15 and handle first aid.

Swim in the bay

The headland shelters the town beach; swim between the flags near a lifeguard post.

02 / LOOK

Watch the fish dry

Families still lay salted fish on wooden racks on the sand near the old quarter.

03 / RIDE

Take the funicular

The funicular has climbed from the beach to Sítio since 1889.

04 / WATCH

See the giant waves

In winter, crowds gather at the lighthouse above Praia do Norte to watch the big-wave surfers.

Morning on the sandSwimFunicular to SítioGrilled fishSunset on the cliff

Arrive by 9:00 for a quiet hour on the sand and a swim before the beach fills. Late in the morning, walk to the funicular at the north end of town and ride up to Sítio for the view over the bay, then walk about 15 minutes west to the Forte de São Miguel Arcanjo and the lighthouse above Praia do Norte. Come back down for a late lunch on the seafront and an afternoon on the beach. For sunset, return to the Sítio viewpoint, which faces west over the ocean. On a rainy day, drive about 13 km inland to the Monastery of Alcobaça.

NAZARÉ WAVE

Stay out.

On the sand

Wear the Nazaré Wave bikini with a linen shirt for the walk along the seafront and a hat for the open sand.

On the funicular and the cliff

Wear sandals with grip for the cobbles in Sítio and bring a windbreaker, since the clifftop is often windy even on warm days. Stay behind the railings at the lighthouse.

In town

A light sweater or denim jacket over a sundress; the sea breeze cools the seafront after sunset.

BEFORE YOU LEAVE

Good to know.

Which airport should I use?

Lisbon (LIS), about 120 km south, roughly 1 hour 30 minutes by car. Porto (OPO) is about 200 km north.

Is it good for swimming?

Yes, at Praia da Nazaré in front of town, between the flags and in lifeguard season (June 20–September 15, 2026). The Atlantic is cool even in summer. Check for water-quality notices, and do not swim at Praia do Norte.

Is the beach step-free?

Yes. Ramps lead from the seafront promenade onto the sand, the beach has an adapted WC, and an amphibious beach chair is available in season.

When are the giant waves?

Mostly from October to March, when big Atlantic swells reach Praia do Norte. The usual viewpoint is the fort and lighthouse at the end of the Sítio headland.

Do I need a car?

Not in town: the beach, Sítio (by funicular) and the restaurants are all walkable. For Alcobaça and the other beaches, drive or take a regional bus.
