WHEN TO GO

Choose the day you want.

Rio’s summer is typically hot and humid. If your plans include a long walk or viewpoints, check the forecast and leave room for rain and cloud. A weekday can give you more space on the sand. Book ahead around major events.

05 / FOOD, LANGUAGE & LOCAL LIFE

From sand to table.

What to order

Pick up pão de queijo with coffee, or order água de coco near the beach. For a longer meal, look for Brazilian cooking, grilled seafood or a feijoada special. Check the menu if you have dietary restrictions.

Local habits

Meet friends by a numbered posto. In Leblon, an afternoon on the sand can turn into petiscos at a neighborhood boteco. Say hello before asking for help, use a cover-up when heading into town, and ask permission before photographing anyone.

RIO AFTER DARK

Three neighborhoods.
Three ways to spend the night.

01 / DINNER AND A CHOPE

Baixo Leblon

Start around Rua Dias Ferreira for dinner, then head toward Avenida Ataulfo de Paiva for a boteco. Jobi is a good starting point for petiscos and draft beer.

02 / A TABLE BY THE SQUARE

Baixo Gávea

Go to Praça Santos Dumont for sidewalk tables and conversation. Have dinner nearby or settle in for snacks and a chope. Check the individual venue before heading out.

03 / BARS AND LATE DINNER

Botafogo

Start around Voluntários da Pátria and Praça Nelson Mandela for Baixo Botafogo. Rua Sorocaba near Mena Barreto is a separate stop with a history of sidewalk nightlife. Check which bars are open that evening before making it your destination.

On a weekend, choose one neighborhood as your base. Check reservations and decide where you’ll meet your ride home before the night gets busy.

RIO EVENT CALENDAR & MONEY

Plan around the celebrations.

Rio Carnival

Usually in February or March, Carnival takes two main forms. Street blocos are neighborhood processions. Check Riotur for the route, start point and access. For the samba school parades at the Sambadrome, pick a parade date and sector and use the organizer’s official ticket channel.

Book lodging early, check road closures and transit changes, and choose a meeting point away from the densest crowds.

New Year’s Eve / Réveillon

On December 31, Copacabana is the main waterfront gathering for music and midnight fireworks. Check the city’s program for the year you’re visiting and plan how you’ll get back before you leave.

Arrive early and check MetrôRio for special boarding, station access and any event ticket requirements. Wear light clothes and bring as little as you need.

Currency / Brazilian real

Brazil uses the Brazilian real (BRL, R$). International cards are widely accepted. Keep some small notes for kiosks and small purchases, and confirm payment options before ordering. Use an authorized exchange provider or an ATM that accepts your card.

06 / WHAT TO WEAR

Dress for the walk back.

THE BEACH-TO-CITY KIT

Swim.
Walk.
Stay out.

On the sand

Wear the Leblon Candy Stripe bikini with a light cover-up, hat and sandals. Bring sun protection and water, and keep valuables to a minimum.

On the promenade

Choose comfortable shoes if you’re walking from Leblon to Arpoador. Pack a dry layer for the ride back and a light rain layer if showers are expected.

In town

A linen shirt, easy dress or breathable separates work for cafés and museums. Check any dress requirements before dinner.

BEFORE YOU LEAVE

Good to know.

Which airport should I use?

Book the airport that fits your flight. Galeão (GIG) is Rio’s main international gateway. Santos Dumont (SDU) is closer to central Rio and primarily serves domestic flights.

Which metro station is best for Leblon?

Antero de Quental serves central Leblon. Jardim de Alah is useful for the east end. Check the operator’s route planner for your exact address.

Where can I watch sunset?

Try Mirante do Leblon for a view back along the waterfront or walk east to Arpoador. Stay on dry, stable ground.

Is Leblon safe for swimming?

Conditions change. Check flags, ask a lifeguard and stay out in rough surf or where swimming is restricted.

Can I visit Prainha from Leblon?

Yes, as a separate West Zone outing. Check access and arrange your ride back before you leave.

What language should I use?

Brazilian Portuguese. A greeting and a few short phrases go a long way.
